MADISON, WI, OCTOBER 1, 2013 – The American Society of Agronomy (ASA) announces the following 2013 awards to be formally presented at the ASA Awards Ceremony on Nov. 5 during the scientific society’s Annual Meeting in Tampa, FL. The annual awards are presented for outstanding contributions to agronomy through education, national and international service, and research.

• G. Tim Hurner, Jr., Florida Southern College - International Certified Crop Adviser of the Year Award: G. Tim Hurner, Jr., professor emeritus, University of Florida– IFAS, as Extension Director after 36 years of service. He received both B.S. and M.A. degrees in fruit crops–citrus production from the University of Florida. He has been a CCA since 1998.
• Maria G. Salas Fernandez, Iowa State University - ASA Early Career Professional Award: Maria Salas Fernandez is an assistant professor and agronomist in the Agronomy Department at Iowa State University. She received a B.S. from the Argentine Catholic University, M.S. from Texas A&M University, and Ph.D. from Cornell University.
• Mark B. David, University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign - Environmental Quality Research Award: Mark David is a professor in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois. He received his B.S. degree from Penn State University, M.S. degree from the University of Maine, and Ph.D. degree from the State University of New York.
• David C. Nielsen, USDA-ARS - Carl Sprengel Agronomic Research Award: David C. Nielsen is a research agronomist with the USDA-ARS Central Great Plains Research Station in Akron, CO. Dr. Nielsen received B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University, and  Ph.D. degree from the University of Nebraska.
• T. Scott Murrell, International Plant Nutrition Institute Americas Group - Werner L. Nelson Award for Diagnosis of Yield-Limiting Factors: Scott Murrell is the U.S. Northcentral Director for the International Plant Nutrition Institute. He received B.A. and M.S. degrees from Purdue University and a Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University.
• Jerry J. Johnson, Colorado State University - Agronomic Extension Education Award: Jerry Johnson is an associate professor and extension agronomist in the Soil and Crop Sciences Department at Colorado State University. He received a B.S. degree from the University of California-Davis, and  M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Washington State University.
• Terry A. Tindall, J.R. Simplot Company - Agronomic Industry Award: Terry A. Tindall is the senior agronomist for the J.R. Simplot Company and located in Boise, ID. He received a B.S. from Brigham Young University and M.S. and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University.
• Nathan O. Nelson, Kansas State University - Agronomic Resident Education Award: Nathan Nelson is an associate professor in the Kansas State University Department of Agronomy. He received a B.S. degree from Kansas State University and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from North Carolina State University.
• Terry L. Roberts, International Plant Nutrition Institute - Agronomic Service Award: Terry L. Roberts is president of the International Plant Nutrition Institute. He received B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan.
• Baoshan Xing, University of Massachusetts-Amherst - Kingenta Agricultural Science Award: Baoshan Xing is professor and environmental and soil chemist in the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, University of Massachusetts. He received B.Sc. degree from Bayi Agricultural University, China and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Alberta, Canada.
• Chunjiang  Zhao, NERCITA - Tengtou Agricultural Science Award: Chunjiang Zhao is a professor and director of China National Engineering Research Center for Information Technology in Agriculture. He received a Ph.D. degree from China Agriculture University.
• Achim Dobermann, IRRI-International Rice Research Institute - International Service in Agronomy Award: Achim Dobermann is the deputy director general for research at the International Rice Research Institute. Dr. Dobermann received a M.Sc. degree in tropical agriculture and a Ph.D. degree in soil science from the University of Leipzig, Germany.
• Samantha S. Shoaf, Oklahoma State University - ASA, CSSA, SSSA Congressional Science Fellow: Samantha Shoaf is an assistant professor in the Plant and Soil Sciences department at Oklahoma State University. She received a B.S. from the University of Florida and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. As the Congressional Science Fellow, she worked on agriculture and nutrition issues for Senator John Thune.
• April L. Ulery, New Mexico State University - ASA, CSSA, SSSA Mentoring Award: April Ulery is a professor of soil science in the Plant and Environmental Sciences Department at New Mexico State University where she teaches and conducts research in environmental soil chemistry. She received a B.S. degree in geology from University of Redlands and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in soil science from the University of California-Riverside.
