Abstract

A scheme involving the use of particle and density separations was used to isolate and identify by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray analysis (SEM/EDX), several trace metal minerals in a mine-waste contaminated soil from Shipham, England. The heavy density (> 3.3 Mg m−3) fraction of this soil contained smithsonite, leadhillite, barite, rutile, goethite, and hematite. The scheme of particle separations appears effective in that the mineral fractions which constitute a minor fraction of a soil matrix can be isolated and identified directly.
