Abstract

Solute movement through soil can be described by a variety of mathematical models whose unknown parameters (often three or more) must be estimated accurately and efficiently. In many cases, the movement of an ion can be described by a breakthrough curve at a given depth. Such a curve resulting from a step input of solute is often of sigmoidal shape. In this paper, an error function model that fits such a breakthrough curve is presented with two unknown parameters. The parameters can be estimated explicitly by a small calculator. Although chosen by least square differences, the parameters can be interpreted on the basis of sound physical principles.
