Recovery of Nitrogen by Rice from Blue-Green Algae Added in a Flooded Soil1

Abstract

Uptake of N from a blue-green alga (Aulosira 68) by rice (Oryza sativa L.) was studied in a greenhouse pot experiment. When a suspension of the alga was buried 5–7 cm deep, 52% of the N added was recovered in the grain and straw of the first rice crop, and an additional 5% was recovered by a ratoon crop and by a subsequent transplanted crop. Additions of NH4Cl equivalent to 100 kg N/ha did not affect the recovery of algal N. Surface placement of the alga reduced recovery by the first crop to 37% of the added N.
