The Gapon Coefficient and the Exchangeable Sodium Percentage-Sodium Adsorption Ratio Relation1

Abstract

Abstract

A recent, corrected thermodynamic equation for the Gapon cation exchange selectivity coefficient produces a relation between the exchangeable sodium ratio (ESR) and the sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) that is indistinguishable from the widely used, empirical ESR-SAR relation when SAR ≤ 40. In this sense, the thermodynamic theory of cation exchange is consistent with the empirical ESR-SAR relation over the range of SAR values that has practical importance in the management of sodium-affected soils.
