Influence of Sorbed Cations on Ammonia Retention Capacity of Tropical Soils1

Abstract

Abstract

The NH3-retention capacity of noncalcareous medium black soil and lateritic soil treated with 0.1N solution of HCl, AlCl3, MgCl2, CaCl2, NaCl or KCl followed the decreasing order: H-soil ≈ Al-soil > Mg-soil ≈ Ca-soil > Na-soil ≈ K-soil > check soil. The order of retention may be explained on the basis of formation of metal cation-NH3 coordinated complexes having differential stability.
