Abstract

The kinetic curve for the early stage of dissolution of synthetic goethite is linear except for a small curved region close to the origin. This curved region has been shown to be due to the very rapid dissolution of a small amount of amorphous ferric hydroxide which is associated with the goethite.

The amount of amorphous ferric hydroxide is usually no more than 0.2% of the total mass of goethite. Its presence cannot be detected even by electron diffraction methods.
