Limitations of Quantitative Soil Clay Mineralogy1

  1. Brian L. McNeal2

Abstract

Abstract

Analysis of the effects of varying the parameters assigned to soil mineral species for the purpose of quantitative mineralogical analysis suggests that absolute determination of mineral contents may be precluded by the variations in soil mineral properties which can be reasonably expected to occur. Rejection of those variations that produce unreasonable results for specific groups of soils, however, verifies that estimation of sample mineral contents for these soils is often valid to within ± 5%.
