Some Observations on Ohio River Alluvial Deposits1

Summary

Samples of sediment were collected immediately after the recession of the waters of the 1937 flood at fourteen points ranging from Cincinnati to the mouth of the Ohio River.

Mechanical and chemical analyses were made of the sediments as a whole. The colloidal material was extracted from each sample and analyzed.

The mechanical composition of the thirteen sediments was nearly constant with about twenty-six per cent clay and sixty-six per cent silt. More than seventy per cent of the clay was less than 0.0002 mm. in diameter.

The composition of the colloid differed considerably from that of the sediment, being of much lower silica content and higher in iron-oxide and alumina.

The chemical character of the colloids of alluvial materials depend upon the nature of the residual soils from the areas drained.

The colloids of the recent sediments varied but little from those of alluvial soils along various tributaries of this watershed. The differences that do obtain usually reflect differences in the parent material of parts of the areas drained.
