Effect of Anions on the Sodium-Calcium Exchange in Soils
- K. L. Babcock and
- R. K. Schulz
Samples of Yolo fine sandy loam were leached with two series of solutions of solutions containing Na and Ca in which the composition varied. In each series the composition of the solutions in the corresponding solutions was the same except that in one series the anion was chloride and in the other it was sulfate. After leaching the samples to equilibrium, the exchangeable sodium was higher for the sulfate series than for the chloride series. This may be attributed to the effect of the different activity coefficients of the salts used. The results have significance for efforts to evaluate water quality. Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
