Abstract

Experiments were conducted on discrete sections of gravity-drained sand columns to determine the relationship between the effective diffusion coefficient of trichloroethylene and moisture content in variably saturated porous media. The columns were gravity drained to closely approximate field conditions and the moisture content within each column ranged from field capacity near the top to saturation near the bottom. Measured effective diffusion coefficients were compared with theoretical coefficients calculated using Millington's expression for tortuosity, modified to incorporate diffusion in both the gas and aqueous phases. Agreement between the measured and theoretical effective diffusion coefficients was good for all moisture contents investigated.
