An Inheritance Study of Tolerance to Atrazine in a Cross of Flax (Linum Usitatissimum L.)1

Abstract

Abstract

A selection of flax, C. I. 2484, having relatively high tolerance to atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) was crossed with ‘Koto,’ a susceptible variety. The F3 and backcross populations were tested for tolerance to atrazine. The atrazine tolerance exhibited by C. I. 2484 behaved as a quantitive character.

Heritability (broad sense) of atrazine tolerance in F3 and BC1F2 populations was estimated to be 29 and 34%, respectively. This relatively low heritability indicates that selection for atrazine tolerance in flax populations will be difficult, at least with the procedures and the criterion used in this study.
