Varietal Differences among Phosphor-Deficient Oat Seedlings1

  1. L. W. Nittler2

Abstract

Abstract

Seedlings of ‘Russell’ oats watered with a nutrient solution lacking phosphorus developed red anthocyanin pigment in coleoptiles and lower leaf sheaths. ‘Garry,’ ‘Niagara,’ ‘Orbit,’ and ‘Tioga’ seedlings were entirely green. Two-thirds of the ‘Rodney’ seedlings were classed as having slight red color. ‘Clintland’ seedlings had a moderate amount of red color, but had much less than Russel.
