Induction of Aneuploids in Hexaploid Oats, Avena sativa L., Through X-Irradiation

Aneuploids were induced in the hexaploid oat variety ‘Cherokee’ through X-radiation (300r, 500r, 700r) of panicles in the pre-anthesis stage. The X1 and control plants were examined for abnormal tetrads (micronuclei in tetrads), and plants with more than 15% abnormal tetrads were classified abnormal and saved as potential sources of aneuploids and translocations. The percentage of abnormal plants was related to the X-ray treatments. Although the percentage (6.4) of monosomics was highest in the 700r treatment, we conclude that the 300r treatment (4.9%) was most efficient in producing monosomics since it was associated with the lowest percentage of translocationsPlease view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
