Use of Area-Weight Relationship to Estimate Leaf Area in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. Cultivar ‘Moapa’)1

The relationship of leaf area to leaf weight was studied in Moapa alfalfa to determine if leaf weight could be used as an estimation of leaf area. Four harvest management regimes and three growth periods were utilized. Leaflets were removed, weighed, verifaxed for measuring with a planimeter, and the oven-dry weight determined. The seasonal change in total leaf area and in size of individual leaves did not appreciably influence the leaf area-leaf weight relationship. Data show that leaf weight can be used to determine leaf area in Moapa alfalfa. Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
