The effect of crossing and inbreeding was determined in autotetraploid maize for three characters, plant height, ear length, and ear weight. Rank of generation means for the three characters was in the order, double crosses > single crosses > F2 > F3 > lines. Regression analysis indicated that nearly all the variability among generation means could be accounted for by differences in level of inbreeding. Implications of these results for breeders of autotetraploid species were discussed. Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
