Changes in mRNA Species during Drought Stress in Winter Wheat

Abstract

Abstract

Drought stress is a major factor limiting wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in arid and semiarid regions. Our objective was to characterize changes occurring at the molecular level in response to drought stress. TAM W-101 wheat was chosen for these studies since it has been previously reported to be drought tolerant in the U.S. Southern Great Plains. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of translation products of RNA isolated from control and stressed leaves and roots revealed numerous polypeptides that had qualitative and quantitative changes following drought stress. Northern blot analysis of RNA showed large increases in rab (responsive to ABA) transcripts during drought stress. Both the in vitro translation and northern blot studies indicate that there is a molecular drought stress response in wheat leaves and roots.
