A Recessive Gene for a Zero Cyst Phenotype in Soybean1

Abstract

Abstract

The identification of specific genes for resistance is essential for efficient control of parasites. The number of cysts per plant is one phenotype of the soybean cyst nematode-soybean association [Heterodera glycines lchinohe-Glycine max (L.) Merr.] and is determined by genes of both organisms. The continuous distribution of the phenotypes is used to arbitrarily assign soybean lines into resistant or susceptible categories. Genetic studies have not been definitive using heterogeneous nematodes and soybean with many genes for resistance. The objective of the current study was to show that single gene resistance was possible. One nematode population was selected and inbred to produce zero cysts on the “susceptible” PI88287. Results with F2 plants and their progeny showed discrete phenotypes as a result of one recessive gene for resistance in PI88287. Apparently, one gene can condition the zero cyst phenotype (“resistance”) when the frequency of the corresponding nematode gene for avirulence is high.
