A seedling synthetic allohexaploid of durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum Desf. ‘Produra’) and Aegilops squarrosa L. was compared with its parents for root NO3 uptake rate in solution culture 21 to 28 days after germination. The allohexaploid, its parents, and a bread wheat (T. aesticum L., ‘Anza’) were compared for N accumulation and cumulative NO3 reduction in sand culture 30 days after germination. The NO3 uptake rate of Ae. squarrosa was greater than that of Produra in solution culture, and that of the allohexaploid was intermediate. In sand culture, the allohexaploid was not different from Produra for either N accumulation or cumulative NO3 reduction, even though Produra and Ae. squarrosa differed for these characters. The allohexaploid and Anza did not differ for N accumulation. Anza had higher cumulative NO3 reduction in roots, but not in shoots, than the allohexaploid.
