Backhoe-Mounted Soil-Coring Machine

A hydraulic soil-coring machine has been designed and constructed to attach to the arm of a tractor-mounted backhoe. The system reduces the passes through a plot with sampling equipment and also allows samples to be taken with the tractor outside the plot when soil and/or crop conditions do not allow access. It has been successfully used in summer row crop experiments for: (i) taking small diameter (to 5 cm) intact soil cores to a maximum depth of 2 m, (ii) inserting access tubes for soil-water monitoring using a neutron probe, and (iii) placing large diameter tubes (up to 30 cm) to shallow depths (45 cm) for nutrient isotope studies.Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
