A Versatile and Economical Tractor-Mounted Soil Sampler1

A hydraulic soil coring machine was constructed for obtaining samples for herbicide residue studies in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] field plots throughout the growing season. The device is mounted on the three-point hitch of a tractor and utilizes a conventional hydraulic cylinder for taking the soil core. The sampling unit moves laterally on a rigid frame, allowing collection of samples at any point up to 75 cm from the center line of the tractor. Samples may be taken to a depth of 50 cm in 5-cm increments. The simplicity of design and economical construction, along with the ease of mounting on the tractor, make this an excellent research tool.Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
