Effect of Different Tillage Methods on Growth and Yield of Silage Corn1

Abstract

Abstract

Tillage methods under irrigated soils in arid or semiarid regions have not been studied extensively. Four methods: chisel plow and one disking (T1), moldboard plow and two disking (T2), rotary tillage only (T3), and no tillage (T4) were used in the present study. A fullseason corn (Zea mays L.) hybrid (Israel variety ‘Neveh Vaar 70’) suitable for both silage and grain was planted on a calcareous clay soil at the College of Agriculture Experiment Station in Bajegah, Shiraz. Final plant stand was 50,000/ha. Plant height was used as an indicator of plant growth. Whole plants were harvested during the milk stage and fresh weights were determined. Greatest growth occurred with method T1. Silage corn yield were 49.7, 46.1, 44.1, and 40.7 mt/ha for methods T2 T2 T3, and T4 respectively.
