Abstract

Abstract

Standard germination tests often overestimate field performance of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor, (L.) Moench] seed. Seed from 60 seed lots were germinated following NH4CI treatment, NaOH treatment, and no treatment. Results from these tests, seed size, and tetrazolium staining were correlated with field stand establishment under four sets of conditions. Germination following NH4CI treatment gave highest and most consistent correlations with field stand establishment. Seed size and tetrazolium tests were poorly related to field stand establishment. Correlations among vigor tests, in general, were high, even with those that did not correlate well with field stand establishment. Thus vigor tests should be related to field stand establishment rather than to another vigor test.
