Germination Characteristics of Cheese-weed (Malva parviflora L.) Seeds

Abstract

Abstract

Cheese-weed (Maha parviflora L.), best known as a weed, has value as a cover crop. The seeds possess mechanisms which delay germination and thus insure establishment over many years. This creates difficulties in testing germination or in establishing crop stands. The seed coat initially is impermeable to water. Permeability alone does not insure germination, which is under additional control, possibly by endogenous inhibiting substances.
