Water Use, Stomatal Action, and Transpiration Unaffected by Atrazine1

Abstract

Abstract

The effects of soil-applied atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) on water use, stomatal activity, and yield of a hybrid and an open-pollinated variety of corn were studied in the field. The studies were conducted in Cecil sandy loam soil using two moisture regimes, irrigated and simulated drought (plastic-covered soil).

Irrigated corn had significantly higher yields, lower water use efficiency, and higher stomatal activity than the nonirrigated corn.

The hybrid yielded more and was a more efficient user of water than the open-pollinated variety.

Atrazine did not significantly affect yield, water use efficiency, or stomatal activity of corn under the experimental conditions.
