Abstract

Agronomic and chemical performance of closely related resistant and susceptible soybean lines was evaluated in the presence of bacterial pustule (Xanthomonas phaseoli var. sojense (Hedges) Starr & Burk.) The mean difference in bacterial pustule score between resistant and susceptible lines was 1.7. With these moderate disease conditions, the average seed yield reduction in the susceptible lines was 4.3%, of which 86% was attributed to reduced seed number and 14% to reduced seed size. On a linear basis, there was a seed yield reduction of 49.8 kg/ha (2.1%) for each unit increase in pustule score. Height, lodging, maturity, protein, and oil percent were comparable in the resistant and susceptible lines.
