Synopsis

Synopsis

Deep aerification (drilling 1-inch diameter holes 6 inches deep on 3-inch centers and backfilling with suitable porous growth medium) increased turf vigor and water intake rate on an established green with compacted soil. Root growth was extensive in holes but very few roots grew in undisturbed compact soil. Oxygen diffusion rates were very low in the compact soil.
