Manual Removal of Suckers from Fresh Market Sweet Corn in New Jersey1

  1. Robert S. Snell2

Synopsis

Synopsis

Manual removal of sweet corn suckers in irrigated plantings in New Jersey does not improve ear weight, ear length, or tip fill. Maturity may be hastened slightly. Removal by cutting at one foot in height does not damage ear weight, ear length, or tip fill; maturity is hastened and regrowth of suckers is slight. This appears to be the best method for growers who wish to remove suckers for greater ease in spraying or dusting and harvesting sweet corn.
