Synopsis

At the first harvest, varieties from southern United States exceeded the others in seedling vigor and forage yields. In subsequent harvests, varieties from 38° to 45° N were equal or superior. The production of varieties originating above 50° N was low. Flowering decreased in order for southern, middle, and northern varieties. Medium red varieties were characterized on the basis of growth type. A shift in type was noted when seeds had been multiplied in a region different from that of varietal origin.
