Synopsis

Percent flowers and pods shedding was increased both by high temperatures and long photoperiod in Clark and Midwest soybean varieties when grown under controlled temperatures and photoperiods. Shedding was not caused by a lack of viable pollen. Under field conditions varieties Mukden, T109, Acc. 2300–2, and Midwest shed 43, 73, 62, and 81% of flowers and pods combined, respectively. From one-third to one-half of total shedding was in the form of pods during various stages of development. Rising temperatures appeared to increase shedding.
